Got a Big Bear Fire Abatement Letter? Here's Exactly What to Do

Why you got the letter

Each spring, Big Bear Fire Department mails abatement notices to property owners across the Valley — occupied homes and vacant lots alike. It isn't personal, and it doesn't necessarily mean your property was flagged as a problem: the notice states the defensible space standards every parcel must meet before fire season peaks. What makes it serious is the fine print: the notification letter is your warning. The department is not obligated to issue a separate notice of violation before citing you.

What the Fire Department expects, in plain English

• 0–5 ft from structures: no pine needles, forest litter, dead vegetation, or combustible mulch — bare, ember-resistant ground
• Within 15 ft: dry brush and high-energy-release vegetation removed near structures, propane tanks, hydrants and wood fencing
• Whole property: forest litter thinned to about 2 inches depth (a thin layer stays for erosion control)
• Roofs, gutters & decks: pine needles cleared from roofing, gutters, under and on decking, stairs and parking pads
• Trees under 45 ft: lower limbs pruned up to 6 ft (max 25% of tree height)
• Trees over 45 ft: limbed 12–15 ft up, and nothing within 10 ft of chimney openings

Your three options

Do it yourself. Doable for a small, flat lot — but budget full weekends, a truck for hauling, and transfer-station trips. The most common DIY failure isn't the clearing, it's the debris: piles left on the property don't count as abatement.

Hire a mow-and-blow crew. Cheaper per hour, but most leave the cut brush at your curb. You still own the hauling problem — and the deadline.

If you're not on the mountain

A huge share of abatement notices go to second-home owners down the hill. You don't need to drive up: forward us the letter, send a few property photos on WhatsApp, approve the quote remotely, and you'll get before-and-after photos when the lot passes muster. Keep those photos — they're your proof of compliance if questions ever come up.

Don't wait for the inspection window

Abatement season compresses fast once letters land: crews book out, and the closer to inspection you start, the fewer options you have. The cheapest and calmest time to handle an abatement letter is the week it arrives.
