Big Bear Fire Safety & Weed Abatement Regulations
The Big Bear Fire Authority has adopted the California Fire Code (including hazardous vegetation management provisions) to reduce wildfire exposure in this Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. Property owners are responsible for managing hazardous vegetation around their buildings.
Defensible Space Required
Property owners must clear hazardous vegetation, weeds, brush, and dead plant material within up to 100 feet of structures to reduce wildfire risk.
Vegetation Management Standards
Overgrown weeds, dry grass, pine needles, dead branches, and combustible debris must be removed. Trees and shrubs must be trimmed to prevent fire spread.
Inspections & Enforcement
Fire authorities and code enforcement may inspect properties. Non-compliance can result in notices, fines, or mandatory abatement at the owner’s expense.
Applies to All Property Types
These requirements apply to homes, rentals, vacant lots, and commercial properties throughout Big Bear County and surrounding mountain communities.
